It’s Tony season, baby! Let’s watch a slasher movie about a community theater production!
Actually, I’ve been wanting to show Stagefright on Horrorfest for a while now, as it’s easily one of the best slasher movies ever made. Directed by Michele Soavi, who also gave us the surreal 1994 masterpiece Cemetery Man, this 1987 Italian production concerns an escaped mental patient who sneaks into a theater and starts killing off the members of a local acting troupe. That’s a simple premise, but Soavi’s execution of it shows his natural flair for the lush, atmospheric style that Italian horror is known for, keeping the film eye-catching and captivating from beginning to end.
Plus the killer wears a fucking owl mask the whole time. What’s not to like?
My guest will be Tim Racine, a hilarious stand-up who also happens to have some first-hand experience with stagecraft. He’s funny, the movie’s terrific, I’m awesome, it’s gonna be a great show. See you there!
