Hoff’s Horrorfest Presents: MANIAC COP 2! UPDATE: Q&A HAPPENING REMOTELY

April 6, 2015

Hoff's Horrorfest Presents: Maniac Cop 2!

UPDATE: Due to unforeseen circumstances, the William Lustig director Q&A will be happening remotely rather than in person.

Hoff’s Horrorfest is a monthly show at Brit Pack (3rd floor, 153 Lafayette, Manhattan) featuring stand-up comedy followed by a horror movie screening and, in this case, a director Q&A! It’s free and BYOB. This month’s installment will be at 9:30pm, Friday, April 24th. Seating is limited; RSVP to hoffmatthews@gmail.com.

This month’s movie: Maniac Cop 2 (1990)

This month’s guest: William Lustig, director of Maniac Cop 2

Oh boy, guys. This is exciting.

Our film for this month is Maniac Cop 2, the energetic shoot-’em-up about an NYPD detective turned renegade zombie. It’s been called “The Greatest ’80s Horror-Action Movie Ever Made” and features some gotta-see-it-to-believe-it action set pieces, hilarious black humor and great performances from the likes of Robert Davi, Claudia Christian, Bruce Campbell, Michael Lerner and the late, great Robert Z’Dar. (This screening was scheduled prior to Mr. Z’Dar’s passing last month, but we’re happy to be showcasing some of his work.)

And as if that weren’t enough, we’ll be joined for a Q&A by William Lustig, director of the Maniac Cop films as well as of Maniac, Vigilante, Uncle Sam and many others. He’s a horror cinema icon and it’ll be a damn thrill to have him on the show.

You have the right to remain speechless in the face of how much fun this is gonna be. Friday, April 24th! See you there!

Hoff’s Horrorfest Presents: POLTERGEIST!

March 23, 2015

PoltergeistHoff’s Horrorfest is a monthly show at Brit Pack (3rd floor, 153 Lafayette, Manhattan) featuring stand-up comedy from me (Hoff Matthews) and a guest performer, followed by a horror movie screening. It’s free and BYOB. This month’s installment will be at 9:30pm, Friday, March 27th. RSVP to hoffmatthews@gmail.com to guarantee admission.

This month’s guest performer: Myka Fox (Someecards; contributor, SNL Weekend Update)

This month’s movie: Poltergeist (1982)

It’s often been theorized that horror movies thrive on poverty. That’s why so many of the genre’s classics have been micro-budget affairs (Night of the Living Dead, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, The Blair Witch Project, etc.): The lack of slick production values gives everything an unsettling griminess, and the inability to afford elaborate special effects leaves the threat mostly unseen and therefore more frightening, because, after all, it’s what we don’t see that really scares us.

And that’s often true. But every once in a while there’s a high-profile studio extravaganza like Poltergeist that manages to hit the nail on the head. Read more…

Hoff’s Horrorfest Presents: PSYCHO II!

February 20, 2015

Psycho IIHoff’s Horrorfest is a monthly show featuring stand-up comedy from me (Hoff Matthews) and a guest performer, followed by a horror movie screening. It’s free and BYOB. This month’s installment will be at 9:30pm, Friday, February 27th, at Brit Pack (3rd floor, 153 Lafayette, Manhattan).

This month’s guest performer: Lukas Kaiser (SPIKE TV, HP5000)

This month’s movie: Psycho II (1983)

The very idea of Psycho II seems like a joke, like a gag from 30 Rock or one of the Scream sequels. Its 1960 Hitchcock predecessor is so sacred to both film buffs generally and horror fans specifically that the concept of a follow-up–let alone one released twenty-three years later, with a new director and in a vastly transformed pop cultural context–appears so obviously misguided and doomed to failure that it could only exist as a satirical indictment of Hollywood’s creative bankruptcy. Hoff’s Horrorfest Presents: H. P. LOVECRAFT’S NECRONOMICON: BOOK OF THE DEAD!

January 6, 2015

H. P. Lovecraft's Necronomicon: Book of the DeadHoff’s Horrorfest is a monthly show featuring stand-up comedy from me (Hoff Matthews) and a guest performer, followed by a horror movie screening. It’s free and there is free beer and free popcorn. This month’s installment will be at 9:30pm, Saturday, January 17th, at Brit Pack (3rd floor, 153 Lafayette, Manhattan).

This month’s guest performer: Charla Lauriston (Clench and Release, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt)

This month’s movie: H. P. Lovecraft’s Necronomicon: Book of the Dead (1993)

Adapting the works of horror writer H. P. Lovecraft for the screen is supposed to be incredibly difficult, and yet I don’t think I’ve ever watched a Lovecraft movie adaptation that I haven’t enjoyed.

It’s true that his focus on otherworldly experiences too alien to be described or imagined wouldn’t seem to gel that well with a visual medium like film, where monsters are expected to be not just described but presented in full view onscreen. But while few movies have captured the essence of Lovecraft’s prose, the ones that try tend to have a foolhardy ambition that makes them entertaining even if they’re not entirely successful.
