Hoff’s Horrorfest Presents: FROM BEYOND!

January 25, 2016

Hoff's Horrorfest Presents: From Beyond!

Hoff’s Horrorfest is a monthly show featuring live comedy from host Hoff Matthews and a guest performer, followed by a horror movie screening. This month’s installment will be at Videology (308 Bedford Ave., Brooklyn) at 9pm, Monday, February 15th. Tickets are $5 at the door, or you can buy online here.

This month’s guest performer: Sketch comedy duo Teenager of the Year

This month’s movie: From Beyond (1986)

After my screening of Dagon back in August, someone asked me if I’d seen From Beyond, another H. P. Lovecraft adaptation from Stuart Gordon, director of both Dagon and Re-Animator. At the time I had to admit I hadn’t, but I’ve rectified that failing, and I was happy to find that From Beyond provides even more effects-laden, over-the-top insanity.

The story, expanded from Lovecraft’s 1934 short story, focuses on the work of two scientists who create a machine allowing malevolent creatures from another dimension to pass into our world. This premise provides a justification for some surreal practical effects reminiscent of Rob Bottin’s work on The Thing (which is a high compliment), as well as for getting Barbara Crampton into a leather S&M outfit. And if that isn’t your thing, we also get to see Dawn of the Dead‘s Ken Foree running around in an orange Speedo.

This Barbara Crampton poster isn’t directly related to From Beyond, but it was too great not to include

This month’s opening act is Teenager of the Year, a sketch comedy duo featuring Tim Racine, who did stand-up before my screening of Stagefright, and Joe Avella, co-host of the horror cinema podcast The New Flesh. Gonna be a scary good time, as always! See you at Videology!
